A cultivar is a plant that has been selectively bred for it’s desirable traits. In the tea world, the desirable trait is typically yield or resistance to disease or parasite. Though there is a great variance of chemical compounds from cultivar to cultivar and thus taste, cultivars are rarely chosen for taste. See here for a more in-depth discussion on varieties and cultivars. I’ve assembled a collection of 480 different cultivars from China, Taiwan, Japan, Sri Lanka and Kenya. I’m currently working on assembling a list of cultivars in use in India. Please let me know if you have any updates to this database or would like to see any features added. I’m going to be adding information over time, specifically what well-known teas are created from these cultivars. Enjoy!
